First of all: No, there are no Jaguars at the Jaguar Rescue Center. But that doesn’t matter, because you can’t carry jaguars through the jungle on your shoulders. With monkeys, anteaters and sloths it’s less problematic, and that’s just a selection of the animals we work in direct contact with. From the beginning I was involved in all work processes, including laundry or washing up in the kitchen, but also the direct contact with animals, which was a very positive surprise. The work schedule is different every day, which is also due to the fact that the density of volunteers is very high, which gives the contact to peers of the same age and so you never get bored even after work (eg volleyball or surfing on the beach). The highlight of every volunteer placement is a week’s work in the La Ceiba reintroduction reserve in the middle of the rainforest. I have heard many opinions that found the time there a bit boring, but I personally think that this was an exciting experience. Of course, it also depends on the character of each individual, and what you do with the chance to shorten your stay in the jungle camp a little in an emergency.
Also to be positively emphasized are the accommodation, to which the hosts Liz and Carlos give a special atmosphere as well as the place Puerto Viejo itself with incredibly beautiful beaches and a reggae mood inspired by Jamaica. In addition there is the very close wildlife (everywhere rustles and moves a bit) and interesting excursion destinations within cycling distance. Absolutely recommendable!
